The needle / الإبرة

في تونس، ينتظر زوجان محافظان بفارغ الصبر ولادة طفلهما الذي طال انتظاره. أثناء إجراء فحص بالموجات فوق الصوتية، يكتشفان أن طفلهما خنثى، أي أنه يعاني من حالة خنثوية. يبلغهما الطبيب أن لديهما ثلاثة أيام لاتخاذ قرار بشأن جنس طفلهما. تنقسم قرارات الزوجين أثناء تنقلهما بين تعقيدات التوجيه الاجتماعي والديني والطبي.

يتصارع الزوجان مع العواقب الاجتماعية التي قد يواجهها   فلهما إذا لم يتوافقا مع المعايير الجنسية الثنائية التقليدية السائدة في المجتمع التونسي. تثقل المخاوف بشأن الوصمة والنبذ المحتمل على أذهانهما.

En Tunisie, un couple conservateur attend avec impatience l’arrivée de leur enfant tant attendu. Lors d’une échographie, ils découvrent que leur bébé est hermaphrodite, c’est-à-dire intersexuel. Le médecin les informe qu’ils ont trois jours pour décider du sexe de leur enfant. Les décisions du couple sont partagées alors qu’ils doivent affronter les complexités des orientations sociales, religieuses et médicales.

Le couple doit faire face aux conséquences sociales auxquelles leur enfant pourrait être confronté s’il ne se conforme pas aux normes binaires traditionnelles de genre qui prévalent dans la société tunisienne. Les inquiétudes concernant la stigmatisation et l’ostracisme potentiel pèsent lourdement sur leur esprit.
